It was supposed to be clear and sunny yesterday at Grandeco, though as can be seen the photos, it pretty much wasn't except at the very top of the mountain, later in the day. No matter, good skiing weather, cold enough but not too cold.

They have added a third park area on the bottom leg of the Akadeko course, which is the long beginner course that winds its way down to the bottom from the top of the gondola. The main mogul course also empties out into this leg, after which that leg always felt like an overly long (kilometer or so?) run-out, so the park features are a nice addition to make that section more enjoyable. Good addition.

There are some PR articles posted in the main building, one of which quotes the manager of the resort as saying that skiing the trees off-piste is officially ok. Patrol will not only not stop people for going into the trees, but will actually give advice on where to go. Instructor guides can be hired as guides to areas outside resort bounds. This seems to be a change from several years ago, when reports indicate that they were pretty aggressive about keeping people out of the trees (though never with much success, from what I have seen). Good to know that it is now officially ok.

Bad news: The Kashmir on-hill restaurant is closed this season, and deleted from the list of restaurants. This means: no Deco Rangers! (I peeked into the other restaurants to see if they had relocated. Nope, no sign of them.) Looking for more information on the web, I found the following video from last spring, which purports to be the final Deco Ranger video. The horsing around they are doing with the plastic food samples seems to confirm that the decision had already been made to shut the place down:

Saraba, Deco Rangers.
Thanks for the memories!

Anyone else think Japan kind of misses out on the 'ski snob' thing?

Yeah maybe some older people but generally... well, there seems to be more boarders than skiers whenever I am out.

Quote

I’m disappointed to report that there still exists among certain skiers a belief that snowboarders are in some way inferior and unworthy of sharing the mountain.

These “we were here first” types tend to view all boarders as unruly, scruffy yobs who charge down the slopes like maniacs, putting their lives (and everyone else’s) at risk.

Let me put my cards on the table – I’m a snowboarder. Always have been, always will be. From the moment I strapped on a board for the first time and felt the thrill of cruising down a slope, admittedly after several days of catching edges and face-planting, I knew this was the sport for me.

But I’m not ideologically opposed to skiing. I even gave it a go recently at the Ski and Snowboard Show in London. But, just like most skiers, I’ve never been seriously inclined to switch and leave the comfort of my board to learn a new discipline from scratch.

I’m not here to start one of those futile debates about which of the two sports is better; such arguments are tiresome and unnecessary. Each one has its merits, and people are always going to have their preference. But I am here to stick up for snowboarders in the face of “skier snobbery”.

Over the years I’ve encountered many people who, upon discovering I was a snowboarder, tutted disapprovingly or made a derisory comment about ruining the mountain for skiers. It happened around a chalet dinner table only last year. And there are even resorts, like Deer Valley and Alta in Utah, which still prohibit snowboarding. Come on, get over it!

This idea that we ruin the mountain is complete nonsense. Yes, some boarders behave irresponsibly, but so do some skiers. It’s about the person, not what they’re riding. I’ve seen plenty of skiers careering down the slope, completely out of control. A reckless boarder is no worse than a reckless skier – and unfortunately there are too many of both.

I urge ski snobs to tune in to the snowboarding events at the Winter Olympics [snowboard cross is on Sunday, February 16]. Watching a world-class snowboarder is just as exhilarating as watching a top skier.

And at the end of the day, skiers and boarders all share the same goal – to enjoy the mountain to the full.

Niseko Wind - Lift Holds

Hi All,

I just had 8 days boarding in Niseko (well, 6 Niseko, 1 Rusutsu and 1 Moiwa). I was there 25th-2nd Feb. Firstly, I had an awesome time. Initially I was worried Niseko would have a big crowd, but I was able to find tonnes of freshies!

However, whilst we were there, the lifts were closed a lot of the time, and I am just wondering if this is typical. I know that the top lifts often close (more often than not a couple of instructors told me), but the Niseko and Annupuri Gondolas were closed for 4 of the 6 days I was there. Apparently Moiwa quad was closed most of the time too (we scored and got it on the day it opened).

We still had an awesome time, but just wondering if this is normal in Jan? How often do these Gondola's shut usually? It does really limit options, especially in Niseko village. There were even a couple of times when the Annupuri quad shut down, effectively ending our day early.

Cheers,
Tom

Hakuba 47

今日はドピーカンと粉雪で最高のコンディションでした。明日は…。ちょっと新雪が欲しいところです!

Was it really 'saiko' (the best) conditions yesterday?
I'm guessing that in reality conditions could be considerably better than they were.

If it were, why would they be wanting/needing new snow tomorrow?

Tired of reading skijo post 最高のコンディション when it blatantly is not.

DAY 1 : THURSDAY 28 NOVEMBER 2013

21 cm in the past 24hrs at MQ (Mike's Quarters, in Higashiyama)

It's that time of the year again.

Local photographer Glen Claydon and Sam Kerr of Niseko Xtreme Tours got first tracks of the season way back on 09 November, but then the warm wind and the rain came and washed most of it away.

The 23 November Opening Day at Grand Hirafu was cancelled and rescheduled for 30 November.

I arrived back on Fantasy Island yesterday afternoon and the snowfall had returned. In spades.

After settling in at the cabin and shovelling the day's snow it was out for Ian MacKenzie's 40th birthday.

Dinner at Niseko Pizza with owner Cezar, Brian from Niseko Ski Academy and Mick from Niseko Cellars, followed by drinks at Niseko Cellars.

Cracking night.

Another good fall overnight and a solid couple of hours shovelling all around the house getting after it before it gets out of control.

I was planning to hit Kagura again this sunday - looks like there's gonna be plenty of snow.
However, latest forecast is now calling for severe gale force winds from Saturday night through Sunday which will very likely result in the top lifts being closed. Kagura isn't worth going to for me without the top quad open.
Usually when the forecast was like this I'd go to Kandatsu - it was in a sheltered valley so didn't tend to be affected by strong winds - however, that place has now closed down.
I wonder if anyone has recommendations for resorts in the Yuzawa area which don't get affected much by strong winds?

Like a lot of people, I first got into snowboarding because of the Nagano Olympics. I moved up to Nagano soon after the Olympics finished and I've been snowboarding since. With the Sochi Olympics winding up, I've gotten all nostalgic and dug up my gear from the period.

Posted Image99 Burton FL Project with 98 Burton CFX bindings. I have my current setup next to it for comparison - 08 Burton Custom with 12 Burton Genesis bindings. The shape of it is not that different to modern boards. Although you can't see it clearly in the photo, it has a lot more camber than the custon.

So, I'm wondering what people have in their quivers. I'd love to see some more stuff from last century.

Climbing Mt. Hotaka from Kawaba Skijo; an unexpected adventure

$

I had no intention of climbing a mountain when I set off for Kawaba on the beautiful midweek national holiday we had last Tuesday. In my mind I imagined myself maybe snowshoeing up from the top of the quad lift to get a nice fresh line but that was about it. Things changed when I came to the ticket counter to buy my six pack of one lift tickets.

The girl at the desk noticed the snowshoes on my back and said “ハイキングするつもりですね。そこに行ってハイキングの申込書を書いてください。 (Your going hiking aren’t you. Please go over there and fill out the form for hiking). Having been to Kawaba countless times with snowshoes and never having filled out a form I was caught off guard. “ハイキングしません。スノーシューと滑ることは練習だけです。” (I was trying to say I am just practicing riding while carrying snowshoes but I said it a bit strangely). “ちょっと待ってください”(Please wait a sec).

Enter the girl potentially hired for her English abilities. “What course are you planning on hiking” This was actually said a bit strangely but I got the gist. “I’m not planning on hiking I’m just carrying the snowshoes to practice riding with them.” That blank look people have when they have no idea what you just said. “You have snowshoes, you are hiking right? Where are you going?” Something gives in in my brain and I decide to just go with the flow. “Yes I’m hiking. I want to climb the mountain.” She helps me fill out the form and I am given a ticket to be returned later. Nice to know they look after the hikers!

Riding the lift towards the top of the mountain I was feeling a bit Schizophrenic. “Why did I come here again? I guess I’m climbing a mountain today. This should be interesting.” At the top of the quad lift I put on my snowshoes and set out on my journey. Plowing through the deep snow after 100 meters I was already feeling it, but the powerful rock wall to my left served as my energy source.

The route up the mountain is on the left side of this beast.

I love trees!

The skies this day where some of the clearest I have ever seen. In the distance you could see the Yatsugatake and the South Alps!

Posted Image

Mt.Asama in the forground was also stunning. You can also see some hikers who benifited from me going first coming up behind me ;)

Posted Image

They returned the favor shortly after. I loved this guys snowshoes!

Posted Image

This last pic doesn't show how steep it was. This next one does. I was "fully prepared".... to walk up an easy hill and snowboard down. I only almost fell once  Everyone else had crampoons and ice axes, I had snowshoes and a snowboard. If I do it again, I will come better prepared.

Climbing up I was loving the trees!

These ones weren't to shabby either.

Mt. Nikko Shirane above Marunuma Kogen seen between some peaks of Mt. Hotaka

After climbing the rock face you come to a small sharp peak.

Posted Image

After climbing the peak and seeeing the rest of the mountain in front of me I decided I probably shouldn't go any farther with my lack of gear. Here are the more prepared climbers heading for the peak.

Posted Image

And one with the whole mountain in the background. One of the hikers said I had already done the hardest stuff, but also wanting to snowboarding and being satisfied with the hike, I decided to turn around.

Posted Image

The views from my little peak where pretty good! Here is Tanigawa and Naeba.

Posted Image

And another shot of Shirane

This line of the peak was looking amazing. You can't really make out the mandatory 5 meter air. The only problem is it leads to nowhereland.

More coming!

I've been to Nozawa Onsen before. Looking for somewhere different. My criteria are different to most snowjapanforum natives.

- advanced to expert in the group
- biggish ski hill
- village infrastructure
- place to stay for a month without constant travelling around
- kids, so want to be able to walk/ski to lifts/slopes
- liberal ropes policy

There are plenty of interesting looking hills around, but Japan has the 80s legacy thing with zero atmosphere or zero town. So that automatically rules out otherwise potentially interesting places like Kagura, Naeba, Yuzawa, Joetsu Kokusai.

Akakan/Akakura Onsen looks OKish, but is it enough to stay interesting.

Europe ticks all the boxes except snow and lack of onsens but that's where we've been last few trips. Really, it's perfect except for the snow. Interesting mountains, great lift infrastructure, 100s of small villages with atmosphere and supermarkets, easy to get to, dirt cheap to live if you look around.

America's OK but the most interesting places are hard to get to and we'd blow a few days getting there. Plus, TSA won't like my ABS gear.

But we'd like to do Japan again. Nozawa was great, but I think another month there would be pushing it. There are only so many times you can do the same lines.

Zao looks OK, but a bit small and no hidden options. But the town has what it needs.

Hakuba valley has options, but it's so spread out.

What we usually do is find a hidden gem and buy a season pass and stay there. Easy done in some places but I can't find any in Japan. Does such a place exist?

Not interested in Niseko.
