SR : HokkaidOH! 2013/14

DAY 1 : THURSDAY 28 NOVEMBER 2013

21 cm in the past 24hrs at MQ (Mike's Quarters, in Higashiyama)

It's that time of the year again.

Local photographer Glen Claydon and Sam Kerr of Niseko Xtreme Tours got first tracks of the season way back on 09 November, but then the warm wind and the rain came and washed most of it away.

The 23 November Opening Day at Grand Hirafu was cancelled and rescheduled for 30 November.

I arrived back on Fantasy Island yesterday afternoon and the snowfall had returned. In spades.

After settling in at the cabin and shovelling the day's snow it was out for Ian MacKenzie's 40th birthday.

Dinner at Niseko Pizza with owner Cezar, Brian from Niseko Ski Academy and Mick from Niseko Cellars, followed by drinks at Niseko Cellars.

Cracking night.

DAY 2 : FRIDAY 29 NOVEMBER 2013

23 cm in the past 24hrs at MQ

As of today 116 cm (46") has fallen in the Niseko Resort Area

Another good fall overnight and a solid couple of hours shovelling all around the house getting after it before it gets out of control.

Went to the Dragon Bistro & Bar opening party in J-Sekka this evening, a return to Hirafu for the restaurant.

Japanese Italian fusion with a celebrated chef from Sapporo.

Looking forward to sampling dinner.

Snowing as I type and Opening Day for Grand Hirafu is scheduled for 8.30 tomorrow.

Let's hope it's as good as last season's opening day

Sky Valley/Hyperbowl Tohach

Finding myself in Osaka during the recent dump of snow I decided to take advantage and get a days skiing in. The snow came Wednesday night, some was still floating around in Osaka on Thursday, but I was busy on Thursday so Friday was the day.

Rika and I set off early, initially the destination was Ojiro, we had been there at the beginning of Jan and enjoyed the small local feel to the place. I also mentioned in the review I did of Ojiro that it would be great after a dump of snow. However I was thinking of Sky Valley instead, it constantly has the most snow in Hyogo, so I asked Rika, the same place as last time, or a new place. New place was the answer so Sky Valley it was.

The drive was interesting, as we got closer to the resort, there was a lot of snow around, and for me a first. The first time to see water being sprayed on the road, not only from pipes at the side, but also from outlets in the middle of the road.

We got there a bit later than planned, traffic on a weekday morning is a bit slow and heavy, however we were on the bottom lift by 9:30. Sky Valley has a bottom base with a rental area, a shop and changing area downstairs and ticket office and cafe upstairs. The stairs run though the middle taking you out to the bottom lifts. There are two lifts, although only one was going today. If the ticket numbers are ordered correctly I was the 92nd adult and Rika was the fist child of the day. There weren't many people there, although I did see two bus's arriving and dropping off a few people. I'm assuming day trippers from Osaka or Kobe.

Posted Image

The bottom lift takes you up to the main area, where you can take a lift to the left that takes you to the border of Sky Valley and Hyperbowl Tohach, and also to the start of the run down to the main base, or a lift to the right that takes you up the right hand side. From the top of both you can ski back towards the middle were there are two restaurants, only one was open today. In front of the open one (number 3) was a roped off area that is supposed to have a kids area. Nothing there today.

Posted Image

Looking down on restuartant 2 and 3

If you haed off to the right from the top of the right lift you can ski down to one more lift that takes you up to the top of the mountain, from there you can head down three different ways, including over to Hyperbowl Tohach.

The snow was great today, large areas of untouched powder. While there were a lot of boarders around they all seemed to stick to the piste. The powder areas seemed to be ignored by most people there. Unfortunately I wasn't able to spend much time in the powder, following, or being followed by a six year old beginner skier round the mountain means sticking to the groomed areas. But there was still plenty of powder beside the tracks to play in.

Heading down from the top lift

After lunch we headed over to Hyperbowl Tohach, and if Sky Valley was quiet, Hyperbowl was almost deserted. I liked it better, the top of Hyperbowl was open and untouched, powder as far as you could see. Nice wide runs with plenty of places to play.

Heading up the lifts at Hyperbowl

We didn't stay long at Hyperbowl, Rika wanted to get back to Sky Valley and have another go on the boxes. She likes skiing on the boxes in the park, and Sky valley had two in a row, one wide one and one skinny one. We did a lot of lapping one of the lifts so she could have a go on the boxes.

We did have one moment during the day which almost ended in tears. After going down the run to the base, a steep, tight run that Rika speed down leaving me way behind, we got on the lift back up and Rika dropped one of her ski poles. To say she was unhappy would be a major understatement. However lady luck was on our side, and it dropped at the very last point that was reachable by walking up from the bottom. So after a run down to the bottom and a bit of a walk the pole was retrieved, and tears were averted.

The blue arrow heading down on the right hand side is the run down to the main base, not very wide and I suspect it might be a road.

Not that busy today

We left just on 4:30, just in time to get caught up in all the traffic as people headed home from work. All in all a good day. Counting the resorts as two, this makes three places I've been to in Hyogo, and I must say I'm impressed with all of them. Almost makes me want to live in Osaka so I can visit more often.

This year I thought I would create a special "Cheese at Resorts" Gallery.

At the moment, myself along with Cheesewoman, Cheesegirl and Cheeseboy are at Nozawa Onsen in Nagano. Lovely place, but no good views yet as it has been snowing.

Anyway to start off my gallery, here's the gallery and some cheese in Nozawa. Just some run of the mill 'natural cheese' as they call it used to melt on pizzas etc. Not the most gourmet start.... wink

Please upload any cheese at resort pics to SnowJapan and tag them as 'cheese at resort'. That way, they'll all be grouped together.

Thanks.

Glove Suggestions

Somehow I misplaced my burton gloves the other day and tore the apartment to pieces trying to find them. No dice, so they must have been donated to the ground somewhere around town. Of course I need another pair before I get out on the mountain was just curious what brands/models people would suggest.

I went to the local sports store but felt like they were seasonally overpriced so decided to shop online after trying on a few pairs.

I'm a big fan of the reusch relation gloves, but they were 120K for the pair. I don't want expensive gloves that are going to soak through after a bit of wet snow, but would pay that much for a good pair of gauntlets that I could keep season after season.

The wife also told me I can get some waterproofing spray for gloves if they start to get damp on me, though I've never heard of anything like that except for boots.

Snow Dude's 2013-14 ski thread (Sun Meadows, Kiyosato, Yamanashi)

I thought it would be nice to make a ski thread as I will be visiting my local resort a lot this year and document the weather/ snow conditions, etc each time I go as a reference for others and as a record for me.
I will also (sometimes) add photos that I take at the resort.
It is a small resort and has 10 courses with the longest being about 1600 metres top to bottom.
The reason I go there, is it is about 20 mins from my house, it is somewhere I have been going for years now and I like the area/ski resort and we have friends who go there too.

Day 1 : 7th Dec 2013 (Opening day) Just one lower course was open with mostly man made snow. Weather was mostly sunny, but very windy peaked out at about +1oC that day. Almost empty!

Day 2 : 8th Dec 2013 Same as above really!

Day 3 : 21st Dec 2013 Two thirds open all natural snow, soft powdery snow, sunny, nice conditions, although clouded up in the afternoon. Quite a few people, but never crowded. Top to bottom skiing.

Day 4: 22nd Dec 2013 It snowed up to about 8cm or so the night before so was treated to fresh pow on top of the already soft snow and sunny sky in the morning. The snow remained soft and powdery the whole day and were plenty of powder pockets to be found all day, albeit chopped up.
Around lunch time onward it clouded over and some light snow fell for a while before turning sunny again More people today..
A great day was had by all.
I will add some photos later, takes too long download from my phone now.

Day 5: 25th Dec 2013 Woke up to absolutely crystal clear blue sky, which lasted the whole day, but no new snow, calm conditions. The snow was soft and powdery on the sun facing slopes and a bit hard packed with icy patches on the sheltered slopes, especially as the temps didn't get above -6 today.
Basically a really nice day on the slopes, although would like some new snow. Looks like tomorrow afternoon onwards should give some nice new snow.
I added a few new pics which I took today.

My first day of skiing at Hirafu. Overnight we had about 10-15 centimeters.
The snow was pretty dry but hard and icy underneath. I just cruised, taking it easy and getting my legs in.

Oze White World Questions

Won a ticket to White World (thank you SJ!) and am thinking to go this weekend with NECK as the forecast is for more snow there than Hakuba!?

My question is.... Do they open the resort on big snow days? Do lifts eventually open if they have to spend time clearing, or is the day a write off? Did they open this last weekend with the big snow?

I live 2hrs away, so it would suck fairly hard if we got there and it was a no go....

Thanks for any info!

Heading to Niseko. 1st time at the snow

Hey guys

Im new to the forum, but have been reading for a while.
Im heading to Niseko at the end of Feb and staying in the Hirafu area.
Cant wait. Been very busy buying all our gear for snowboarding, as we have always had a massive interest in it.
Got some great gera and just can't wait to get out there and use it now.

What are some things i should look at doing while I'm there?
We are staying for about 12 days. So we have a fair bit of time.

Ive heard that there are not a lot of ATM and places where i can get money out. Or use a card also.
Just wondering how true this is. I just need to know how much money to take with me thats all.

Thanks

Seems to be a few stories cropping up in a few threads recently.

We missed the snowfall the other day but there's still a bit hanging around the base of the famous telephone box.

A rainy day here today, but I noticed that last year's thread was also started on 15th November.

May the box be completely covered this year.

(For newcomers, last year's fantastic and thoroughly exciting thread is here)

Photos of Japanese ski resorts... taken from other skijo

As I was at Iwappara and Yuzawa Kogen today, I realised just how many skijo you can see in the area.

Thought it might be a good idea for a thread - photos of skijo taken from other skijo. Well I find it interesting anyway!

SJ-David kindly added a new public gallery on the Forums, so anyone can add photos to it.

When you upload photo via the Forums ('Gallery' link top right), just choose 'From one skijo to another' as the gallery. Simples!

Feel free to add photos if you like.

Anyway, here's some from today:

Kagura (Yuzawa, Niigata) - 28th January 2014

Early on this morning I thought I might regret not taking a trip to one of my targets that are a bit further away, such were the clear blue skies. But now at 3pm it's pretty grey and dull here in Muikamachi and had been clouding and getting quite overcast since late morning. It can change so quickly.

So I chose Kagura which is about 30 minutes drive. Hadn't been to Kagura for maybe 3 seasons. I really enjoyed it and was skiing for well over 4 hours which is a long time for me. Snow was ok, not brilliant, but surely the best in the area at the moment as it almost always is at Kagura. But fresh would be nice please.

The things I didn't like about Kagura are the same as always. The main one being it feels like it takes ages to get from the bottom of the ropeway to the first proper ski. About 50 minutes actually (Ropeway > quad lift > gondola > quad lift). But when I got to the skiing it was a lot of fun.

I'm still not enamoured with Kagura as a subject for photos though. The views north towards Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma weren't good today as it was quickly getting overcast and not clear at all. And as Kagura is so wide and open, there's not that much to take pics of. Not the kind that float the muika-boat anyway. Having said that, it is of course very lovely up there. Somehow I don't feel like whipping the camera out like I did at, say, Tenjindaira last week. Perhaps I should go to places like Tenjindaira later in the season, as it's hard to live up to!

So here's some photos and lines I saw
